Rio de Janeiro, March 30 (IANS) Sao Paulo beat Catanduvense 2-0 in the 16th round to keep its first position in the 2012 Sao Paulo state championship.
Sao Paulo, without an injured Luis Fabiano, struggled offensively throughout the match. However, an inspired performance by Fernandinho led the team to its eighth consecutive victory, Xinhua reported.
The team’s first goal came in the 74th minute when Rodrigo Caio headed the ball to Fernandinho who then fired a spectacular shot past keeper Filippi and into the back of the net. Fernandinho scored his brace in the extra time to give Sao Paulo a deserved win.
The result took Sao Paulo to top position with 37 points.
