Chandigarh, July 12 (Inditop.com) In light of the recent surge in animal carcasses being discovered in various towns of the state, the Haryana police have decided to keep a strict vigil on the inter-state movement of animals including cows, buffaloes and bulls to prevent incidents of animal slaughter.
“Detection of such incidents at Rohtak and Sirsa was reviewed by senior officials and guidelines have been issued to all district superintendents of police to take appropriate action. They have also been directed to submit a compliance report to DGP (Law and Order) by July 15,” said a police spokesman here Sunday.
“As per the guidelines, any inter-state movement of animals would be viewed seriously and a model of community policing, involving concerned citizens, would be adopted all across the state to curb this menace,” he added.
He said that as far as possible, all the animals would be handed over to the nearest gaushalas (cow sheds) and the vehicles and the persons involved in their transportation would be thoroughly verified.
Police have also emphasised that cattle fairs should be regularly monitored. It has been observed that at the end of the fair, the criminals who indulge in the slaughtering business, procure the remaining animals.
“Before transporting the animals, a special permit from the animal husbandry department, declaring that the cattle falls under the category of milch animal and is medically fit, has been made mandatory,” pointed out the spokesman.
The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), the main opposition party of the state, has also condemned the findings.
“Well-organised gangs of criminals, who are indulging in cow slaughter, are active in the state. Police have failed to take timely action. Such incidents are a blot on the state government as the cow occupies a well-regarded position in our society,” INLD president and former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala told reporters here Sunday.
“We demand that a high-level enquiry should be initiated to investigate this whole affair,” he added.
