Kolkata, April 30 (IANS) Former Trinamool Congress legislator Arabul Islam, booked for several offences following complaints of physical assault by some college teachers, Monday surrendered before a West Bengal court which granted him bail, a lawyer said.
Bhangar College professor Debjani Dey and nine of her colleagues filed a complaint against Arabul Islam, president of the college governing body, and his son Haquibul Islam.
“Both Islam and his son have been granted bail on personal bond of Rs.1,000 each after they surrendered before the court in South 24 Parganas district. The offences for which they were booked were all bailable so they were granted bail immediately,” said the Trinamool leader’s counsel.
Counsel also threatened to sue the teachers for defamation as they had used the word “hoodlums” in their complaint to describe the father-son duo.
Islam surrendered before the court after party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reportedly ordered him to do so.
Dey alleged that she sustained an injury on her chin when Islam barged into the staff room of the college with some outsiders, abused her and threw a jug full of water at her last week.
The police complaint did not mention that any jug was flung at her but said that the teachers were physically assaulted.
