New Delhi, April 30 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Meera Agrawal was Monday elected the new mayor of the north Delhi civic agency. The deputy mayor’s post also went to the BJP.

“Meera Aggarwal and Azad Singh of BJP were elected unanimously for the coveted posts of mayor and deputy mayor of north Delhi,” officials of the north Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said.
Three-time councilor Aggarwal (50), holding a degree in law, was elected from Sawan Park in north Delhi.
The 104-ward north MCD has been newly formed after elections to the trifurcated MCD were held April 15. The BJP bagged 59 seats in the north MCD, followed by the Congress with 29 seats.
All the newly elected councilors were sworn in at the first house meeting of the corporation Monday.
Election to the East Delhi corporation will be held Tuesday. BJP’s Annapoorna Mishra is the lone nominee for the position as the Congress has not fielded any candidate.
