Shanghai, May 3 (IANS) Shanghai’s elderly population, aged above 60, will increase to 4.3 million in the next three years, the city administration said.

The Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau said Wednesday the elderly people will constitute 30 percent of the city’s registered population. Over 700,000 people will be aged above 80.
It said the number of the elderly population in 2015 will double the figure recorded during 2005-10. Families comprising only seniors will increase markedly, especially in the suburban areas, the Shanghai Daily Daily reported Thursday.
Lack of old-age homes and financial support for the elderly are major problems in the city, officials said.
