Islamabad, July 14 (Inditop.com) The government of Pakistan’s Punjab province has decided to dissociate itself from the court case against Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of Mumbai terror attacks, and filed a plea for withdrawal of the case, a media report said Tuesday.
Punjab Advocate General Punjab Raza Farooq said the Jamaat-ud-Daawa chief was put under house arrest on the directives of the federal government, which failed to provide solid evidence to support the house arrest, according to the News International.
Therefore, Farooq said, the Punjab government has decided to dissociate itself from Hafiz Saeed’s case and filed a petition for withdrawal of the case in the Supreme Court.
Saeed was detained in December 2008 and placed under house arrest after a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution banned his organisation. He was released in June after the Lahore High Court ruled that he cannot be kept under house arrest without any evidence.
India and the US have demanded that strict action be taken against Saeed for his alleged role in the November 26, 2008, Mumbai terror attacks.
