Islamabad, July 5 (IANS) Pakistan Thursday said talks are continuing with the US on drone attacks in the country’s northwest tribal region in an effort to reach a mutually acceptable solution.
“Pakistan has a clear position on drone attacks that these are counter-productive, violative of our territorial integrity and against international law,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Moazzam Khan was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
US unmanned aircraft regularly carry out strikes in the tribal region despite opposition from Islamabad, which says the attacks are counterproductive and a violation of pakistan’s sovereignty.
Washington has rejected the calls to stop the drone strikes, insisting that they are effective to eliminate Al Qaeda and Taliban militants hiding in the region.
On reopening of the supply routes for NATO forces, the foreign ministry spokesman said the entire process of re-engagement with the US and NATO was undertaken in a transparent manner.
The decision to block NATO supplies in November last year was taken to ensure that the sovereignty is not violated and red-lines are respected, he said.
