Lucknow, July 19 (Inditop.com) Tension prevailed in Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district when several candidates participating in an Indian Army recruitment drive Sunday indulged in arson and vandalism, alleging irregularities in screening of candidates.
Even as there was no official statement about casualty during the incident, there were unconfirmed reports that one candidate was killed and another sustained critical injuries when military police resorted to firing to control the mob.
Candidates also targeted trains at the Chandauli railway station.
Briefing reporters in Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh termed the incident as “unfortunate” and said senior government officials have been instructed to rush to Chandauli to control the situation.
He said the state government has also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter.
In the wake of the violence in Chandauli, the state government has also forwarded a letter to the central government and the ministry of defence to ensure co-ordination with the state government before organising recruitment camps.
“It has been done to keep a check on such incidents in the future,” Singh said.
Chandauli is about 300 km from Lucknow.
