Kolkata, July 19 (Inditop.com) Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) patriarch and former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu is stable but would remain under 24-hour medical observation at his Salt Lake Kolkata residence, an aide said Sunday.

Basu is expected to be discharged from the hospital late Sunday, his personal assistant Joykrishna Ghosh said.

“The medical board has decided to release Jyoti Basu from the hospital today (Sunday) evening as his condition is stable now. But he will be under 24-hour medical observation at his residence,” Ghosh told IANS.

“All necessary medical arrangements will be there at Basu’s Indira Bhavan residence at Salt Lake and a team of doctors will also monitor the veteran Communist leader for round the clock.”

The 96-year-old CPI-M leader, who was admitted to the hospital following gastro-intestinal complications and transient loss of consciousness last Sunday, was shifted out of the intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) to a room Tuesday as his condition improved.

Basu injured his left leg after another fall at his home May 13. He had cracked a rib after a fall in the bathroom in 2007.

Born 1914 in Kolkata, Basu became chief minister in June 1977. He stepped down voluntarily on health grounds in November 2000.
