New Delhi, July 20 (Inditop.com) The Delhi High Court Monday reduced the jail term of Sanjeev Nanda from five years to two, more than 10 years after his speeding BMW car mowed down six people in the capital’s Lodhi Road.
From Jan 10, 1999 to July 20, 2009, the many twists and turns in the much publicised case:
Jan 10, 1999: Sanjeev Nanda, who was driving a BMW, runs over six people, including three policemen, in Lodhi Road.
Jan 11: Nanda and his friends Siddharth Gupta and Manik Kapoor arrested.
Jan 13: Court grants bail to Gupta and Kapoor while extending judicial custody for Nanda.
Jan 14: Sunil Kulkarni, a key witness in the case, appears before the police and records his statement.
Jan 15: Delhi Police appoints I.U. Khan as special public prosecutor.
April 5: High court rejects Nanda’s bail plea.
April 7: Police file charge sheet against accused under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 201 (destruction of evidence) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC.
April 8: Delhi Police formally charges all the accused — Sanjeev Nanda, Manik Kapoor, Siddharth Gupta, (his father) businessman Rajiv Gupta and his domestic helps Bhola Nath and Sham Singh.
Aug 3: Charges framed against all accused by the court.
Aug 18: Court starts recording of testimonies of prosecution witnesses.
Sep 30: Prosecution drops Kulkarni as eyewitness, contending he had been bought over.
Oct 4: Nanda gets bail from the high court.
June 1, 2001: Delhi High Court directs Nanda to execute a bond of Rs.150 million and two sureties of the same amount while allowing him go to the US for 22 days.
December 2003: Recording of prosecution witnesses’ testimony concludes with the examination of the 61th witness.
Jan 2, 2004: Nanda starts recording his statement.
May 14, 2007: Kulkarni deposes before the city court and records statement.
May 17: Kulkarni identifies Nanda in court and claims he saw him driving the car on the night of the accident.
May 30: Telecast of sting operation shows collusion between senior defence counsel R.K. Anand and prosecutor I.U.Khan.
May 31: Delhi High Court takes up the matter of the collusion on its own.
Aug 21: The high court convicts two lawyers for obstructing administration of justice and debars them from appearing in courts for four months.
Aug 26: Trial court reserves its verdict.
Sep 2: Nanda held guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Sep 5: Court sentences Nanda to five years in jail.
Dec 19: Nanda granted three weeks interim bail by Delhi High Court to meet his ailing grandfather, former navy chief Admiral S.M. Nanda.
May 12, 2009: High court grants another three weeks of interim bail to Nanda to enable him to attend the funeral of his grandfather.
July 20, 2009: High court reduces Nanda’s term from five years to two.
