Jhajjar (Haryana), July 20 (Inditop.com) Tension prevailed in Dhrana village in this Haryana district as heavy security was deployed Monday, a day after rampaging khap (caste panchayat) members clashed with policemen who stopped them from evicting a man and his family for marrying a girl from the same clan.

Khap councils are notorious for their vicious campaign against couples getting married within the same clan.

23-year-old Ravinder Gehlawat’s family was asked to leave Dhrana village by Sunday morning after he married a 20-year-old girl from the Kadiyan clan. He was accused of violating a custom of no marriage between the sects of Gehlawat and Kadiyan as they have a “brotherhood” akin to consanguinity.

“I had personally gone to meet the family members of Ravinder today to assure them about their safety,” Deputy Commissioner Saket Kumar said.

After the Sunday clash, the district administration had imposed prohibitory orders in the village, barring people from holding public meetings or assembling at one place.

“There was no incident of violence in the village. The situation is gradually becoming normal,” Saurabh Singh, district police chief, told Inditop.
