London, Oct 1 (IANS) A British and an Australian woman, who were kidnapped by a group of bandits in the Amazon jungle while on a canoe trip, have been rescued by the Ecuador army, it was reported here.
Briton Katy Cox, 28, was abducted along with 32-year-old Australian Fiona Wilde Friday, The Sun reported.
Reports from the Sucumbios province in Ecuador said a group of bandits known as the “Black Eagles”, who have terrorised villages along the Colombian border for years, may have been responsible.
The pair, said to be in “good condition”, feared they would die.
“When the helicopters got right above us, the kidnappers made us hide under bushes. The kidnappers got scared. They were, we think, close to maybe killing us. Then they changed their minds and told us to run. We didn’t think anyone was looking for us,” Wilde told The Sun.
Cox, an accountant for the National Health Service (NHS), was six weeks into a nine-month trip around Asia, Australia and South America.
