Thrissur (Kerala), Oct 2 (IANS) The ruling Congress Tuesday launched a fact-finding mission to the colonies of the Scheduled Castes in Kerala’s 14 districts to know about their socio-economic condition and present a report to the state government.
“I will visit one SC colony in each of the 14 districts in the state to make an on-the-spot study on the overall condition of these people. I have already informed Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes & Backward Classes A.P. Anilkumar,” state Congress president Ramesh Chennithala told reporters.
Named as Gandhi Gramam programme of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), it was launched on Gandhi Jayanti when Chennithala reached the Schduled Castes’ colony at Mala near here Tuesday.
The Scheduled Castes population in the state constitutes 9.81 per cent of the state’s total 33.1 million people.
“As part of the visit we are doing a survey also, which will enable us to come up with a complete report which would be submitted to the government,” added Chennithala.
In Kerala, the SC population is made up of 53 different communities. Palakkad district with 13.85 per cent of the SC population leads, followed by the capital district with 11.87 per cent.
