Bhubaneswar, July 22 (Inditop.com) A Maoist couple, reportedly involved in dozens of crimes, surrendered in Orissa Wednesday, police said.
Surendra Brekedda, 20, and his wife Jaya Ruppy, 19, both members of the Bansadhara division of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), surrendered before the police in the southern district of Rayagada, 390 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.
“They were involved in dozens of crimes. They surrendered to join the mainstream because they said Maoists have drifted from their ideology,” district Superintendent of Police Ashish Kumar Singh told IANS on telephone.
“The couple told police that they will lead a normal life now.”
“Surendra was a member of a core committee of the Bansadhara division which was carrying out major operations,” he said.
Although Surendra and Jaya joined the CPI-Maoist some time in 2003, they got married only last year.
Maoist guerrillas, who claim to be fighting for the cause of the poor, are active in more than half of the state’s 30 districts.
