Madrid, Oct 31 (IANS) Radamel Falcao has become a hero at the Vicente Calderon Stadium as a result of his goals which have helped his side Atletico Madrid to two European titles in the past six months. But with some of the big clubs vying for his signature, the striker is yet to make up his mind about the future.
The Colombian footballer’s heroics also mean that Atletico are joint-top of the Spanish La Liga with FC Barcelona. Both teams have 25 points from nine matches while defending champions Real Madrid are fourth with 17 points, reports Xinhua.
Last season saw Falcao score two goals in the Europa League final against Athletic Club Bilbao, while he netted another brace to see Atletico win the European Supercup in August.
The Colombian has also hit the ground running at the start of the domestic league season, with 10 goals in the Primera Liga.
All of that has sparked rumours about the striker’s future with Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City all said to be willing to meet the 60 million euros of his buyout clause.
Atletico Madrid insist they have no plans to see their star player and hero leave, although club president Enrique Cerezo has also hinted that the 60 million Euros would be a major help when it comes to paying off the club’s rising debts.
Falcao, meanwhile, has refused to talk about his future, saying his only interest is the club he is at now.
“I am not thinking about leaving at the moment and I have never thought about it,” he said.
“The thought of leaving is not in my head,” added Falcao, who admitted he could have left Atletico over the summer.
“There were many factors and the club said it would be hard to keep me if we didn’t play in the Champions League, but they made a big effort to keep me,” he said.
That is good news for Atletico fans, but their joy may be short lived as the striker confessed that he couldn’t say what the future could hold.
“It is something that doesn’t depend on me. The club has its needs and we depend on certain results. There are a lot of factors in play – the club’s economy, qualifying for the Champions League. A lot of time us players are the last to know. But what I can say is that I am happy. I don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow, all I can say is that I am happy and I am enjoying myself at the club, then we will see,” concluded Falcao.
