Mumbai, Oct 31 (IANS) The photograph of a shopkeeper battling a massive market fire in Mumbai has been given the ‘Picture of the Year’ award by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. India Today photojournalist Mandar Deodhar had taken the picture in 2011.
Works of 26 other photojournalists have also been picked for the National Press Photo Contest awards, given by the Media Foundation of India, a non-profit organisation, and Yes Bank.
Deodhar took the photo of the lone shopkeeper battling the massive fire that gutted 1,500 shops in the city’s Manish Market in November 2011.
A jury of award-winning photojournalists picked the photo from around 6,500 entries, the organisers said Wednesday.
An annual photo book of the works of 27 photojournalists from across India was also released by Chavan at a function Tuesday night.
This is only photo contest for full-time photojournalists from the mainstream media with a total prize money of Rs.6.75 lakh.
