Moscow, Nov 1 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Dan Petrescu’s Dynamo football club came close to being knocked out of the Russian Cup by one of their own former youth players before a late charge yielded a 2-1 home win over second-tier FC Khimki.
Midfielder Vladimir Sobolev, 21, left Dynamo for Khimki in the summer and returned to punish his old club with a 56th-minute goal that left last season’s finalists on the brink of an exit in the last 16 Wednesday.
Ex-Germany striker Kevin Kuranyi and 18-year-old Andrei Panyukov then scored in the last 10 minutes to give the hosts the win.
Dynamo’s quarterfinal opponents are Anzhi, who also came back from a goal down to win 2-1 against Krylya Sovetov.
