New Delhi, Nov 1 (IANS) Over 900 Delhi government schools will soon incorporate “road safety” in their curriculum to develop a culture of discipline in the younger generation, a minister said Thursday.

“This step will not only help ensure safety for our children while using roads but also develop a road safety culture in the younger generation,” Education Minister Kiran Walia said after inaugurating a two-day global meet on ‘Road Safety in Urban and Rural Roads’ here.
She said that rules and knowledge of road safety will be incorporated in the existing curriculum of subjects like English, Hindi, mathematics, science and social studies.
The safety issue “will be introduced in a subtle” way through various subjects, without burdening the students, said Walia.
According to Walia, the Central Board of Secondary Education, schools, the Delhi government, IRF and the Institute of Road Traffic Education were working on the curriculum.
Organised by of the India chapter of the Geneva-based International Road Federation (IRF), a global body for promoting and advocating safe road developments, the conference is being attended by about 1,000 experts from 30 countries.
IRF chairman K.K. Kapila, citing a recent WHO report, said that India accounted for more than 10 percent of the global road accident deaths of 1.3 million.
“This conference will discuss ways and means to reduce fatal road accidents especially on urban and rural roads,” said Kapila.
