Mumbai, Jan 1 (IANS) A new flyover in a suburb here should be named ‘Nirbhaya’ in memory of the brave Delhi girl who died of injuries after her gang-rape, a Congress legislator demanded Tuesday.

Legislator from Vile Parle Krishna Hegde met Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and made the demand for naming the upcoming Milan subway flyover in the area after the Delhi gang-rape victim, whose identity has not been revealed but who is being referred to by a pseudonym Nirbhaya.
“I would like to suggest that the Milan subway flyover, which will be completed shortly, should be named ‘Nirbhaya’ as a tribute to the strength of women. ‘Nirbhaya’ also embodies a spirit of fearlessness and will serve as an inspiration to our future generations,” Hegde told Chavan.
He said that in case the government decided to disclose the actual identity of the victim at a later stage, then the flyover should be named accordingly.
The Milan subway flyover is expected to be completed within the next four months.
In a related development, Congress Lok Sabha member from north Mumbai Sanjay Nirupam has organised a candle-light march Thursday in memory of the Delhi gang-rape victim.
Nirupam said the two-km long march will start from Malad railway station and terminate at Kandivli station and would see participation of women, students and general public.
The 23-year-old victim was gang-raped and brutally assaulted in Delhi in a moving bus Dec 16, outraging the entire nation. She died of her injuries Dec 29 in a Singapore hospital.
