New Delhi, Jan 2 (IANS) They are angry. They seek justice. They are firm in their demand for the death penalty for rapists. Their demands are now being scribbled on scraps of paper to be forwarded to a committee working on making tougher laws against rape.
A group, formed randomly at the protest site, has started a mission to collect written messages from people protesting the rape and death of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi. The messages will be sent to the Justice J.S. Verma Committee, formed by the government to look into amendments for enhanced punishment in sexual offences of extreme nature against women.
The unnamed group has also started a Facebook page called the “16 December Kranti”, where they are posting messages.
“We started to collect messages on pieces of paper from protestors and the public, seeking suggestions from them for security of women and punishments for the accused in the gang-rape case,” Vikas Sharma, one of the protestors, told IANS Wednesday.
“We got together to raise our voice. Anyone can join us. We got this idea of collecting letters and messages four days ago Dec 29. We got about a thousand notes in four days,” Vikas Tyagi, another protestor, said.
Riddhi Sharma wrote that all six accused should be given the death sentence or chemical castration.
“We need speedy solutions. How many women will have to sacrifice their lives before the government comes out with stringent laws. We want justice. The accused should be punished so that no man thinks about molesting a girl or a woman,” Sharma said.
Savita Singh wrote: “Hang the culprits. Laws should be strict for people who break laws.”
“We plan to draft the suggestions and submit these to the Justice Verma Committee, as it is the voice of common people,” Sharma added.
“You should feel ashamed for insulting a girl. You have mother who gave birth to you. At least you should have learnt to respect her. Are you an animal or a cannibal. All of you should be stripped (the accused). You should get the same punishment as what you did to the gang-rape victim,” Suman Sinha said in her letter.
A modest crowd continued the protest at Jantar Mantar, demanding stringent punishment for the six attackers for the Dec 16 brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old woman who died Dec 29 of vicious injuries inflicted on her.
Two men from Uttar Pradesh continued their hunger strike demanding the death sentence for her attackers.
The protest spot — with candles burning in memory of the victim — is guarded by a large number of police and paramilitary personnel.
