London, Jan 4 (IANS) A man believed to be Britain’s oldest surviving prisoner of war has died at the age of 98.
Squadron Leader Alfie Fripp spent most of World War II in captivity after his Blenheim bomber aircraft was shot down over Belgium in 1939, The Sun reported.
He was held at 12 prisoner of war camps until 1945, including at the Stalag Luft III in Poland.
Fripp acted as a spy for the 76 men who broke out of the camp. Tragically, 50 were caught and executed.
The last of the “39ers”, troops who spent most of the war in captivity, Fripp died in a Bournemouth hospital.
