New Delhi, Jan 10 (IANS) The union cabinet Thursday approved enhancement of the area of homes meant for rehabilitation of people affected by fire and land subsidence in Jharia and Raniganj Coalfields of Bharat Coking Coal and Eastern Coalfields respectively.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved, “enhancement of area of dwelling units for rehabilitation …for affected persons in line with JNNURM (Jawahar Lal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission) norms, under the Master Plan for Jharia and Raniganj Coalfields,” an official statement said.
The area would be increased from “27 square metres of super built area to 38.92 square metres of super built area (25.10 square metres of carpet area/floor area),” the statement said.
CCEA also authorised the coal ministry to approve the revised cost estimates — on account of increasing the area — to be finalised after the demographic survey was completed, the statement said.
The additional cost on account of revision of carpet area of the dwelling units would be funded by the respective coal companies, it added.
The statement said the implementation of the master plan would lead to safety of people and saving large amount of coal, among others.
The government had earlier approved a master plan for dealing with fire, subsidence and rehabilitation of affected people.
Jharia and Raniganj are in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand and Burdwan district of West Bengal respectively.
