Dharamsala, July 29 (Inditop.com) Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, was Wednesday made an honorary citizen of the Polish capital Warsaw, his aides said here.
“His Holiness (the Dalai Lama) was named an honorary citizen of Warsaw in a ceremony at the Royal Castle there Wednesday. He got the recognition for his campaign for Tibet’s autonomy,” Tenzin Taklha, joint secretary at the Dalai Lama’s office, told IANS.
In Poland, the Nobel laureate is already an honorary citizen of Wroclaw and has an honorary doctorate from the Jagiellonian University, he added.
The Buddhist monk last visited Poland in Dec 2008, where he attended ceremonies to mark the 25th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Polish labour leader Lech Walesa. At that time, he also met French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
The 74-year-old spiritual guru has travelled across the world to garner support for “meaningful autonomy” for Tibet despite stern warnings by Beijing to foreign governments that receive visits from the Tibetan spiritual leader.
The Dalai Lama, along with many of his supporters, fled Tibet and took refuge in India when Chinese troops moved in and took control of Lhasa in 1959.
The Dalai Lama has ever since been heading the Tibetan government-in-exile at McLeodganj, near here. The government-in-exile is not recognised by any country in the world.
