Thiruvananthapuram, June 1 (IANS) Chandy Oommen, son of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said Saturday that he is a candidate for the Youth Congress organisational polls in Kerala.
“Yes, I am contesting to the post of secretary and the polls will be spread over two days (Monday and Tuesday) with the result to be declared on June 6,” said the junior Chandy.
Oommen,27, a law graduate was the National Students Union of India (NSUI) general secretary (Kerala region), besides being a member in the election commission of the student panel.
“In all, there are more than 60,000 voters and 71 contestants for the post of president, general secretary and secretaries. This time the bench mark is that anyone who gets more than 200 votes becomes a secretary,” said the son of the chief minister, who pointed out that he has been in active student politics since 2000.
Incidentally Chief Minister Oommen Chandy also came through student politics and was president of the Kerala Students Union in 1967-69 and of the Youth Congress in 1970-71.
Since 1970 Chandy has been contesting the assembly elections and has won 10 consecutive elections from Puthupally in Kottayam district in a row.
