New Delhi, Aug 31 (IANS) The younger brother of the Dec 16, 2012 gang rape victim allegedly tried to slap the juvenile accused after the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB)sentenced him to three years in a remand home Saturday.
JJB held the minor guilty of rape and murder of the 23-year-old physiotherapy intern and sentenced him to three years in a correctional home, including the period he has already spent in the remand home.
The victim’s mother, father, elder and younger brothers had arrived in the morning for hearing the verdict.
Sources said, “Suddenly, the younger brother moved towards the juvenile and tried to slap him after pronouncement of the order.”
However, counsels and the victim’s parents present in the court room save the minor.
Later, the victim’s mother told the media she was “not satisfied” with verdict.
With her welled up, she said: “We are not satisfied with the verdict.”
“If minors do such things and get away so easily, how will the law work? It cannot be done like this. Law needs to be changed. We will move the higher court against the judgment,” she said.
The younger brother was also seen with tears in his eyes.
The victim’s father also expressed his dissatisfaction.
“Our daughter has died and now after listening to this verdict, we have virtually died. This will only encourage crime,” he said.
He added, “I was hoping the juvenile will be given life imprisonment, but he got only three years (in a special home).”
“The court, by giving a lighter punishment of three years, has actually encouraged other juveniles to commit crime. The law must be changed,” he said.
The prosecution had called the minor as the “most brutal of the six”. He was the one who had called the victim and her male friend to board the bus after furnishing wrong information. He, along with five others, then had gang raped the girl in the moving bus and later thrown the two without clothes on the road.
The police had said that apart from sexually assaulting the girl, the minor had ripped out her internal organs with a rod.
The brutal gang rape had sparked nationwide protests, with people demanding death for the perpetrators of the crime.
