Jammu, Sep 5 (IANS) Police said Thursday that two people have been arrested in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of at least five mentally challenged women in a home run by a non-governmental organisation in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The director and a security guard of the home run by the Rotary Inner Wheels in Channi area have so far been arrested for questioning,” a senior police officer told IANS.
The Jammu district magistrate and senior superintendent of police received complaints about the sexual exploitation of mentally challenged inmates of the home.
Sources told IANS that at least eight women lodged in the home were mentally challenged, and a gynaecological examination of five of them established sexual exploitation.
“Following the medical examination, we registered a First Information Report in Trikuta Nagar police station and investigations are going on,” the officer said.
The home has since been taken over by authorities.
Earlier this year, police arrested a ‘Peer’ (religious teacher) in central Badgam district of the Kashmir Valley for running a fake spiritual centre where young girls were being sexually exploited in the name of spiritual training.
