United Nations, Sep 27 (IANS) US Secretary of State John Kerry said Thursday that the US and Russia have reached an agreement on a UN Security Council resolution about Syrian chemical weapons.
“I was pleased to have a meeting with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and we did reach an agreement with respect to the resolution,” Kerry told reporters, Xinhua reported.
“We are now doing the final work on pulling that language together,” he added.
Samantha Power, US ambassador to the United Nations, also said on Twitter that the two sides have reached a deal on the resolution “legally obligating” Syria to give up its chemical stockpile.
The measure, she added, would go to the full Security Council Thursday night.
Russia and the US have been at odds over the Syrian chemical weapons resolution. Kerry and Lavrov met this week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The Security Council is scheduled to hold a closed-door meeting Thursday night on Syria.
