Chandigarh, Aug 10 (Inditop.com) A 21-year-old Afghan who was studying in a college here was killed when a speeding car hit him while he was crossing the road, police said Monday.

Ahmed Jawid had come to India just a month back and was pursuing a Bachelors degree at at the Government College in Sector 11. He was staying in a hostel and was returning after watching a movie with his friends Sunday when the accident took place, a police official said.

“They were crossing the road near the railway station to board a bus. A rashly-driven car crossed the red-light, hit the victim and threw him a good distance away,” the official said.

“The driver did not stop the car and fled the scene. However, a police control room van intercepted the car and arrested the driver. The youth was immediately taken to PGIMER (Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) but he succumbed to his injuries later,” he added.

The driver was identified as 21-year-old Abhishek Singla, the son of a leading businessman of neighbouring Panchkula town.

Police have informed the Afghanistan embassy officials in New Delhi about the accident.

Said Rehmet Ullah, president of the Afghan students’ association in Chandigarh: “Jawid was a resident of Jowzjan town in Afghanistan and we have informed his family members there. We are making arrangements to send his body back to Afghanistan.”

“We have lost a bright student and a promising football player in the form of Jawid due to the negligence of a driver who was in an inebriated condition at the time of the accident,” Rehmet Ullah told Inditop.
