Tunis, Nov 3 (IANS) The International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced Saturday its decision to suspend Tunisia from the 2014 Davis Cup.
The decision came after the ITF Board of Directors convened and said that Tunisia has violated the ITF regulations when it ordered its Tunisian player Malek Jaziri to withdraw from a game with his Israeli counterpart Amir Weintraub at the 2013 Tashkent Challenger last month, reported Xinhua.
The members of the ITF board expressed its dissatisfaction with the Tunisian meddling in the international sporting. “There is no room for prejudice of any kind in sport or in society,” said ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti.
Therefore, the council has opted for sending a strong message to the Tunisian federation and that this kind of practices will not be tolerated by one of our members.
“The decision is final,” the ITF said.
Malek Jaziri’s brother and manager told the media in October that his brother had received a correspondence from his national federation asking him to withdraw from the game and not to compete against the Israeli sportsman.
