New Delhi, Feb 1 (IANS) Disabled people from across India will Monday stage a protest here demanding the government to pass the Disability Rights bill after incorporating the amendments demanded by rights groups.
“The bill in the current form is not just a negation of already-won rights and the recent judgment of the Supreme Court in the matter of jobs for people with disabilities but it militates against the UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which it claims to harmonise with,” Javed Abidi, convenor of the Disabled Rights Group, told the media.
Abidi said Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had announced that the bill will be introduced during the forthcoming session of parliament.
“But as the organisations working for the disabled found some loopholes in the content of the bill, they requested for the amendments,” he said.
“We had during the past one month been campaigning, demanding the tabling and passage of this bill, as the bill in the current form is unacceptable,” he said.
