Kolkata, March 24 (IANS) Around Rs.1 lakh of unaccounted Indian and Bhutanese currency was seized by police in West Bengal’s Siliguri city Monday, an Election Commission official said.
According to assistant chief electoral officer Amitjyoti Bhattacharji, police arrested a citizen who was carrying the money without any documentation.
“We have not received the detailed report yet. The initial report stated that an arrest has been made and a case registered,” he told reporters here.
The official process for the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal began last week with the panel issuing the notification for four seats — Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar — in the northern part of the state where polling would be held April 17.
So far nine candidates from Cooch Behar, seven each from Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri and six from Darjeeling have filed their nominations.
In Darjeeling, former Indian soccer captain Bhaichung Bhutia filed his nomination as the Trinamool Congress candidate while S.S. Ahluwalia filed as Bharatiya Janata Party’s representative.
Meanwhile the poll panel is scanning newspaper and television reports for violations of Model Code of Conduct.
