New Delhi, April 2 (IANS) Be it mythology or contemporary times, issues related to women’s freedom have raised many a question. A play was staged here comparing the life of Sita from the epic “Ramayana” to that of the Dec 16, 2012 Delhi gang rape victim.
Sixteen theatre groups from various parts of India came together in the capital earlier this week, where they staged plays on various themes ranging from literary adaptations to social issues.
One of the plays, “Ekti Manabir Akhyan”, meaning story of a human being, drew similarities in the life of Sita with that of the Delhi gang rape victim.
“Sita was not just a mythological character, she was a woman and a human being who had to pass the test of fire to prove purity of her character. Such was the fate of the Dec 16 gang rape victim that she was punished for her independence and freedom,” Saswati Ganguli, writer of the play and lecturer in a Delhi University college, told IANS.
“These women are from different eras, but what is astonishing and ironical is that nothing has changed for women in this country. I wanted to highlight these things through the play,” she said.
The play was staged by the Milani group of Mayur Vihar in east Delhi.
