Washington, April 7 (Inditop) The US says it has no illusions about terrorists in Pakistan trying to hit the US and its allies, but believes that Islamabad understands the threat the militants pose to their own government.
“We’re under no illusions,” State Department spokesman Robert Wood said Monday when asked about Pakistani Taliban leaders’ reported threat to launch two attacks per week in direct response to the US campaign of missile attacks in northwest Pakistan.
“The Taliban, Al Qaida, other terrorist operations are going to continue their work.We have to do what we can to prevent them,” he said.
“I think the Pakistani government certainly understands very clearly what a threat these terrorists pose to their own government,” Wood said. “And you know, we will take necessary security steps to protect our personnel, our people.”
“But look, this is no secret that there are terrorists out there trying to hit us and hit our allies. What is important is that we have a unified approach to dealing with terrorism,” he said.
The US special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke is in the region talking about the way forward in implementation of the results of the strategic review of the US policy for the region.
“So we’ll continue to work this issue because it is not going to go away right away. We have to keep working hard to fight terrorism,” Wood said.
