Cairo, July 14 (IANS) An Egyptian court Monday overturned a previous verdict banning senior members of former president Hosni Mubarak’s party from running for parliamentary elections, media reported.
A court ruling issued May 6 banned leaders of Mubarak’s now defunct National Democratic Party (NDP) from running for the presidential and parliamentary elections, Xinhua reported citing state-run Ahram newspaper.
The NDP was dissolved and its funds and property were confiscated in April, 2011 after a popular uprising that toppled the long-time ruler Mubarak.
The Cairo Court for Urgent Matters Sunday accepted an appeal against the verdict and decided to null it.
The court presided by Judge Mohamed Ayoub said the attached documents did not prove corruption of the party members.
The leaders of the party were banned from running for the late May presidential election. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, former head of the military intelligence during Mubarak era, won the polls by a landslide victory.
Currently, the members and the leaders of the NDP party could run for the parliamentary elections within the coming few months.
