The California wildfires have forced animal rights activists to scrap a McDonald’s protest, which was to be led by rocker CHRISSIE HYNDE.
The Pretenders star was hoping to launch her ‘I’m hatin’ it’ vegetarian campaign against the fast food chain in Los Angeles on Monday (31Aug09), but organisers have cancelled the event – because so many of those involved are too busy trying to rescue animals caught up in the fires blazing near Los Angeles.
Hynde, who runs a veggie restaurant in her native Akron, Ohio, teamed up with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to lead the protest outside a West Hollywood McDonald’s as Big Mac lovers lined up for lunch – but they’ll be able to eat in peace.
A spokesperson for PETA adds, “PETA cancelled the protest because the fire is devastating the area and has affected a lot of our organisers and activists, who are scrambling to foster animals and evacuate their homes.
“We couldn’t have anticipated that the fire would double in size overnight, but since the fire is affecting so many people and animals in L.A., we had no choice but to postpone the protest.
Chrissie doesn’t even know yet, as she is on her tour bus en route to L.A. and we haven’t been able to get through to her.
“It won’t be a wasted trip for Hynde – she is scheduled to perform with The Pretenders at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Thursday (03Sep09)
