Kolkata, Sep 1 (IANS) Street plays in which child actors voiced their right for proper nutrition were organised across the city Monday to promote nutrition for every child, coinciding with the National Nutrition Week.
An initiative of World Vision India, a Christian humanitarian organisation, child actors and adults playing the part of parents rented the air with slogans of “Amader Pushti Chai” (We want nutrition, in Bengali) during peak hours in eight locations of the city.
“This is part of the organisation’s ’24 Hour Famine’ campaign running in six Indian cities, that urges individuals to set apart a day to fast and stand for lakhs of Indian children who go to bed hungry every day,” Aditi Roy Majumdar, cluster co-ordinator of the organisation, said during a performance at the Academy of Fine Arts.
Promoted by the women and child development ministry, the nutrition week will run Sep 1-7.
According to estimates, India has a quarter of the world’s hungry. As many as 40 percent of the population is malnourished – a decrease of only 10 percent in the last three decades.
