Islamabad, Jan 2 (IANS) Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a letter to President Mamnoon Hussain urged him to dismiss mercy pleas of five terrorists on death row, media reported Friday.
The letter states that the five criminals were involved in acts of terrorism and have been awarded the death penalty, Geo News reported.
The five convicts are Muhammad Akramul Haq alias Lahori, Ahmed Ali alias Asif, Muhammad Tayaab alias Sajjad, Ghullam Shabir alias Doctor, and Zulfiqar Ali.
The five prisoners hail from Karachi and have been convicted for target killings. They were arrested in different instances.
On Dec 17, Sharif approved the removal of moratorium on the death penalty in terrorism cases after the attack on Peshawar’s Army Public School the previous day left over 140 students and teachers dead.
The moratorium on the death penalty was imposed by former president Asif Ali Zardari in 2008.
