MERYL STREEP was shunned by JULIA CHILD when she appealed to the U.S. culinary queen for help with a charity drive – 20 years before she went on to portray the chef in JULIE & JULIA.
The veteran actress plays Child in the new film, but it wasn’t Streep’s first experience with the iconic cook.
She says, “I never met her, but I got a cranky letter from her once, when I wrote to her and tried to enlist her help with my work in the early Slow Food movement – an organisation that campaigns against fast food – back in 1989.
“I was working with this group that was trying to get people to eat more organic food, and I thought, ‘Gosh, we should get Julia involved.’ She wrote a very brusque response, saying she wasn’t interested.”
