Faridabad (Haryana), Sep 9 (Inditop.com) At least two men were killed and three suffered injuries while an unspecified number of people remained trapped under debris Wednesday after a three-storey shopping centre collapsed in this Haryana city adjoining the national capital.

“The bodies of two men have already been taken out of debris. Three people who have suffered several injuries were rescued earlier,” Deputy Commissioner Faridabad Praveen Kumar told Inditop.

“Several others are feared trapped inside. However, their number is not confirmed as yet. Rescue operations are still on and will continue for a few hours,” Kumar added.

The incident took place in the New Industrial Township (NIT) Phase I here at around 12.45 p.m. when the building came crashing down with a deafening roar.

The shopping centre is quite popular among people here.

Nearly 2,000 people gathered at the spot as rescue teams worked to clear the debris. Ten cranes were working at the spot to assist authorities in the rescue operations. Fire brigade and ambulance were also present.

According to a senior Faridabad police official: “The two men whose bodies have been taken out of debris were apparently working in the complex.”

“Some repair work was going on in the building. Heavy generator sets were installed on top of the building when it came crashing down,” the officer added.

Asked if installation of the heavy generator could be the reason behind the collapse, Praveen Kumar said: “The exact reason is not confirmed yet but the generator can be a reason.”
