WILLIAM SHATNER has appealed to a mayor in Canada to assist in a campaign to release an elephant from a local zoo.

The Star Trek actor is pleading with officials at Edmonton’s Valley Zoo to move lone elephant Lucy to another facility because she spends much of the winter inside.

In a letter penned to the city’s mayor Stephen Mandel, he says although Edmonton “can capably take care of its own… in a larger sense, these extraordinary animals are everyone’s responsibility… she’s old, feeble and many of us know how that feels.”

But zoo officials have slammed Shatner’s plea, insisting he is unaware of Lucy’s true circumstances.

Veterinarian Doctor Milton Ness says, “Celebrities have their right to their opinions but unfortunately I don’t believe that they’ve got all the information. I am a Star Trek fan, but Lucy is really where she’s supposed to be.”
