Kathmandu, April 30 (IANS) The death toll in Nepal’s devastating earthquake has touched 5,700 and nearly 12,000 have been injured, it was announced on Thursday evening.
The worst hit Sindhupalchok recorded 1,587 deaths, followed by Kathmandu (1,039), Nuwakot (707), Dhading (527), Gorkha (405), Kavre (275), Bhaktapur (252) and Lalitpur district (168).
The National Emergency Operation Centre under the home ministry put the number of injured at 11,538.
Officials say the death toll is likely to climb up further. Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has warned the numbers may touch 10,000, making it the worst ever quake to hit Nepal.
The Centre put the number of “totally affected” houses at over 1.3 million and partially affected houses at 85,856. More than 10,000 government buildings have been totally damaged.
Meanwhile, three tremors were felt on Thursday, between 6 and 9 a.m.
The first two measured 4.7 on the Richter scale and the third 3.9, said the National Seismological Centre.
