Mexico City, May 28 (IANS) The death toll from the tornado that hit the northern Mexican city of Ciudad Acuña earlier this week has risen to 14, emergency management officials said.
“An adult who was hospitalised” after Monday’s tornado has died, National Emergency Management Office coordinator Luis Felipe Puente said on Wednesday in a Twitter post, reports Efe.
The tornado lasted just six seconds, but it caused extensive damage in three neighbourhoods in Ciudad Acuña, a border city in the northern state of Coahuila.
The twister knocked out electric and water service, destroyed dozens of vehicles and damaged about 750 houses, officials said.
President Enrique Peña Nieto, accompanied by Coahuila Gov. Ruben Moreira and members of his Cabinet, toured Ciudad Acuña on Tuesday and met with families affected by the deadly tornado.
The president promised to provide all the support needed to help the city return to normal as soon as possible.
