Lagos, June 5 (IANS) Nigerian police on Thursday confirmed that a French tourist was shot dead and his wife injured in a suspected robbery in Nigeria’s Ebonyi State, media reported.
National police spokesperson Emmanuel Ojukwu told Xinhua news agency that the incident happened two days ago in the southern state.
“The couple were French tourists and they were camped in the bush when attacked,” Ojukwu said.
Last year, a German construction worker was shot dead in southwest Nigeria’s Ogun state by unknown gunmen, when travelling with several workers without security escorts.
Crime has risen since the West African country returned to civilian rule on May 29, 1999, after 15 years of military rule.
Armed robbers who attack and rob their victims in broad daylight have overwhelmed the police force.
