New Delhi, Sep 14 (Inditop.com) The National Library in Kolkata, an institution of national importance, has shifted most of its collections from the heritage building, Belvedere, to the newly-constructed Bhasa Bhavan in the same complex, a press statement by the culture ministry said Monday.

The ministry of culture is planning to use Belvedere as a heritage building, and has set up a committee to recommend the most appropriate utilization of the architectural marvel that the heritage building of the National Library is.-

The constraints and stipulation that are essential for the preservation of heritage buildings in India will be kept in mind, a ministry official said.

The main feature of this building is the grand flight of steps with a carriage portico below which is somewhat similar to the government house in Kolkata. These steps lead to the vestibule, a tastefully decorated room followed by a large hall.

The 15-member committee is headed by Barun De, chairman of the West Bengal Heritage Commission. Other members have been drawn from different fields such as art and architecture, theatre, archaeology, literature and history.

The committee will consult various stakeholders and concerned groups and submit its report in six months.

The committee will deliberate on different available options and will consult concerned groups, including the National Library officials, to ascertain their views on this as well.

The committee will recommend the most appropriate way to utilise this building, keeping in mind the constraints and stipulations for the preservation of the heritage building.
