Guwahati, June 19 (IANS) A journalist working with a language daily in Assam was shot at by a group of militants in Assam’s Udalguri district on Thursday, police said on Friday.
Prashanta Kumar, 35, was picked up by some armed men from Khairabari area of the district on Thursday evening and shot at.
The militants, who picked up the journalist with ‘Asomiya Pratidin’, were identified as members of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland faction opposed to any peace talks, police said.
Kumar, who received bullet injury on his left shoulder, was stated to be out of danger.
“The militants must have assumed him to be dead and abandoned him. Some villagers later spotted him and took him to a local hospital. He was shifted to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for better treatment,” police said.
Meanwhile, the Journalist Action Committee and Journalists’ Forum Assam have expressed shock at the incident and demanded stringent actions against the perpetrators.
They also urged Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to take appropriate actions against the attackers.
