Brussels, June 21 (IANS) Several thousand people attended International Yoga Day events in major cities across Belgium on Sunday.
In the capital Brussels, more than 5,000 people — mostly dressed in white — participated in a mass yoga session at the Bois de la Cambre Park.
Some 2,500 people attended in Antwerp, while cities such as Ghent and Leuven also saw sizable gatherings performing yogic exercises.
“I am delighted with the huge response in Belgium to celebrate the International Yoga Day. I see this as a strong manifestation of people’s overwhelming interest in yoga for their personal and global well-being,” Manjeev Singh Puri, India’s Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and European Union, told Xinhua.
“With the UN declaring June 21 to be the International Day of Yoga, India’s heritage of yoga has become the world’s heritage,” he added.
The yoga events in Belgium were hosted by a range of regional yoga associations in collaboration with the Indian embassy.
June 21 was declared as International Yoga Day following a UN resolution piloted by India and co-sponsored by 177 countries and regions. There was not a single vote against the resolution.
