Kabul, June 30 (IANS) At least one civilian was killed and 22 were wounded in a suicide car bomb attack by the Taliban near the diplomatic quarter in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul on Tuesday, the interior ministry confirmed.
“A convoy of NATO forces was targeted in the attack but none of them were harmed,” interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said. “One person was killed and 22 others were wounded in this attack. All the victims were civilians.”
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.
Health officials confirmed three women and three children were also wounded in the explosion, TOLONews reported.
An earlier report by TOLONews said four people were killed.
Six vehicles were destroyed in the blast and extensive damage was caused to nearby buildings.
The Afghan Supreme Court and the US embassy are located near the site of the attack. “The obvious target of the attack was a foreign convoy moving along the airport road,” a witness said.
Thick black smoke was seen rising from the site. Ambulances ferried the injured to hospitals.
