Rio De Janiero, July 20 (IANS) Sport Recife scored on either side of the half-time to defeat nine-man Sao Paulo 2-0 in Brazil’s Serie A championship.

Elber opened the scoring on Sunday just after the half-hour mark at Sport’s Arena Pernambuco before Ferrugem added the second goal for his team in the 93rd minute, Xinhua reported
Sao Paulo saw their chances of victory all but fade when Paulo Henrique Ganso and Luis Fabiano were dismissed for their second yellow cards, respectively, with less than 10 minutes remaining.
The result lifted Sport to fourth in the standings with 27 points from 14 matches, three points ahead of seventh-placed Sao Paulo.
In other matches on Sunday, Atletico Paranaense beat Chapecoense 1-0, Coritiba held Figueirense to 0-0, Vasco da Gama defeated Fluminense 2-1, Palmeiras overcame Santos 1-0, Avai held Cruzeiro to 1-1 and Ponte Preta drew Joinville 1-1.
