Lucknow, Sep 20 (Inditop.com) A Government Railway Police (GRP) head constable was killed and a constable injured in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district when criminals opened fire on them on being challenged late Satuday night, officials said.
The criminals, three in number, escaped after killing the policeman in the gunbattle around midnight near the railway tracks in the Ram Ganga area of the district.
Head constable Chotelal Gupta and constable Vindhyachal were patrolling the railway tracks when they noticed three people hiding in the bushes in an adjacent field. The cops ordered them to come out and but the criminals opened fire on them, killing Gupta on the spot and injuring Vidhyachal, inspector Gajendra Singh of Subhash Nagar police station told Inditop over phone.
The cops also retaliated but the three criminals managed to escape.
Vindhyachal, who received a bullet injury in his leg, is being treated in the GRP Hospital and doctors said he is out of danger.
Singh said the local police have launched a joint hunt with the GRP to nab the attackers.
Bareilly is about 250 km from Lucknow.
