Bombay High Court recently declined a request to quash an FIR against a Chembur man, his father, and three married sisters accused of cruelty under Section 498A of the IPC. The allegations included making the complainant, a newlywed woman, perform household chores and show proof via video calls. The complainant also accused them of demanding gifts from her parents and retaining her jewellery. The court found the allegations serious enough to warrant concern for the complainant’s safety, suggesting the offences were aimed at extorting money and valuables from her family.
